Is “Tech Neck” Really Causing Your Pain? New Research Says Maybe Not.

Most of us have heard that looking down at our phones causes “tech neck.” But a new year-long study has revealed something surprising: the angle of your neck while using your phone may not be the main cause of neck pain.
What the Study Found
Researchers followed hundreds of adults for 12 months and measured how much their necks bent while using a smartphone. At the end of the study, they compared these measurements with who developed neck pain.
The result?
People who bent their necks more while using their phones were not more likely to develop neck pain.
This challenges the popular idea that phone posture alone causes long-term problems.
So What Does Increase the Risk of Neck Pain?
Two clear factors stood out:
1. Poor Sleep Quality
Participants with low-quality sleep were more likely to develop neck pain over the year.
Good sleep helps muscles recover, reduces tension, and plays a big role in how the body manages pain.
2. Low Levels of Physical Activity
People who weren’t active enough were at significantly higher risk of neck pain — even more so than those with forward-head posture while using a phone.
Regular movement keeps the spine mobile, strong, and resilient.
What This Means for You
This research shows that neck pain isn’t just about posture or how you hold your phone. It’s influenced by your overall lifestyle, especially how well you sleep and how much you move throughout the day.
Improving these two areas may have a bigger impact on neck pain than constantly worrying about your posture.
