Low Back Pain and Avoidance of Movement

Low Back Pain and Avoidance of Movement
May 7, 2026Health Tips

Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal issues and for many people it leads to avoiding movement out of fear of making things worse. This is often referred to as fear-avoidance behaviour, where concern about pain results in reduced activity over time.

While short-term rest may be appropriate in some cases, prolonged avoidance of movement can have the opposite effect. Reduced activity may lead to decreased strength, increased stiffness and lower confidence in everyday movements. Over time, simple tasks like bending, lifting or walking can feel more difficult.

Research in musculoskeletal health highlights the importance of staying active within comfortable limits when managing non-specific low back pain. Gradual, guided movement helps maintain strength, mobility and overall function.

At CP Clinic, we work with individuals experiencing back pain and reduced confidence in movement. Following a detailed assessment, we create a personalised treatment plan based on your needs and goals. This may include a combination of hands-on therapy, exercise-based rehabilitation and other evidence-based treatments where appropriate.

We also place a strong focus on education, helping you better understand your pain so it feels less overwhelming and easier to manage.

How we can help:
✔ Personalised treatment plans
✔ Movement-based rehabilitation
✔ Hands-on therapy where appropriate
✔ Education and reassurance

If back pain is limiting your movement, the right support can help you regain confidence and return to normal activity.

Book your appointment today and take the first step towards better movement.
