Understanding TMJ: Causes, Symptoms, and How CP Clinic Can Help

Understanding TMJ: Causes, Symptoms, and How CP Clinic Can Help
September 11, 2025Health TipsNews

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, commonly known as TMJ, is a condition that affects the joints connecting your jaw to your skull. While often overlooked, TMJ can significantly impact daily life, causing discomfort, pain, and difficulty with everyday activities such as eating, speaking, or even sleeping.

The temporomandibular joints, located just in front of your ears on either side of your head, act like sliding hinges that allow your jaw to move up and down, side to side, and forward and backward. TMJ disorder occurs when these joints or the surrounding muscles do not function properly, often leading to pain, stiffness, and restricted movement.

People with TMJ may experience a wide range of symptoms. Commonly, individuals report jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing, headaches, earaches, facial stiffness, or even episodes where the jaw locks in place. These symptoms can be intermittent or persistent and are often aggravated by stress, teeth grinding, or repetitive jaw movements.

The causes of TMJ disorder are varied. Muscle tension from overuse of the jaw, injuries to the jaw or head, and conditions such as arthritis can all contribute. Poor posture, particularly of the neck and shoulders, may place additional strain on the jaw muscles. Stress can also exacerbate symptoms by increasing muscle tension in the jaw and face.

At CP Clinic, we take a multidisciplinary approach to TMJ management. Our team combines physiotherapy, osteopathy, and rehabilitation techniques to provide personalised care that addresses both symptoms and underlying causes. Through hands-on therapy, targeted exercises, and education on posture, jaw habits, and stress management, we aim to restore function, reduce pain, and prevent long-term issues.

Early intervention is key. If you experience persistent jaw pain, clicking, or difficulty with chewing, seeking professional support can prevent your symptoms from worsening and improve your quality of life. With the right guidance and treatment, TMJ discomfort can be managed effectively, helping you regain comfort and confidence in everyday activities.

Book a consultation with CP Clinic today and take the first step toward relieving TMJ discomfort and improving jaw health.
